Bone loss, doctors say osteoporosis, is an imbalance in the activity of the osteoblasts that build up the bone and osteoclasts, which are responsible for the breakdown of bone tissue. Through this assembly and disassembly process, our skeleton usually renews itself every 7 years and adapts again and again to new requirements. With predominantly osteoclast activity, the bone becomes porous over time, so that it is no longer up to its task even with lower loads than usual.
Osteoporosis is probably caused by a disorder of the metabolism and often goes completely unnoticed over a long period of time. Women are twice as often affected as men.
Although osteoporosis is not causally curable, its course can be at least greatly delayed, especially with intensive strength training. Often the course can even be reversed with sufficiently high-dose strength training, so that despite existing osteoporosis more bone mass is increased than degraded and thus the load capacity even increases in the course of training. There is little to no success in the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, which have resulted in measures that have relied solely on the use of tobacco, coffee and alcohol and have increasingly consumed vitamin D and calcium-containing foods, such as dairy products, eggs and green vegetables. Only if a lot of exercise and strength training with high intensities is added, an improvement in the situation can be expected. Targeted individual strength training is the most important prevention and the best therapy for bones and muscles.
